What is Hummus?

Everything you need to know about the world's most beloved chickpea dip

Hummus is a creamy dip made from cooked chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), freshly squeezed lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. The dish originates from the Middle East and has been eaten for thousands of years. It's traditionally served with warm pita bread and is rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

The History of Hummus

Hummus has roots stretching back thousands of years in Middle Eastern food culture. The oldest known recipe resembling modern hummus appears in cookbooks from 13th-century Cairo. The dish has since become a cornerstone in the cuisines of Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan.

The word "hummus" simply means "chickpeas" in Arabic. In the Middle East, hummus is eaten daily — for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's more than a dish; it's a cultural institution.

  1. Soaking — Dried chickpeas are soaked overnight in cold water.
  2. Cooking — The chickpeas are boiled until soft and creamy.
  3. Blending — Chickpeas, premium tahini, freshly squeezed lemon, and garlic are blended to a silky smooth consistency.
  4. Serving — Topped with olive oil, paprika, fresh parsley, and your choice of topping.

The secret? Patience and real ingredients. Founder Ilan has refined the recipe over more than 40 years.
